Wilmington, N.C. – An evening with Rennie Harris Puremovement will conclude the University of North Carolina Wilmington Arts in Action seven-part performance season at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 9 in Kenan Auditorium on the campus of UNCW. The show offers a more genuine kind of hip-hop than seen on television and encompasses its roots as well as celebrates its recent developments. Harris will also conduct a hip-hop master class for students and members of the community in the UNCW Student Recreation Center at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9. RSVP is required; e-mail artsinaction@uncw.edu. All are welcome to observe at no cost.

“Rennie Harris Puremovement moves beyond exploitative rap videos and attaches art and history to hip-hop, making their shows some of the most powerful dance performed in America today,” said Shannon Hooker, assistant director for programs and marketing, University Union.

Founded in 1992 by Philadelphia native Lorenzo (Rennie) Harris, Rennie Harris Puremovement was conceived with the vision for sharing an appreciation for diversity and is dedicated to preserving and disseminating hip-hop culture through workshops, classes, history lecture/demonstrations, long-term residencies, mentoring programs and public performances. RHPM has established a strong reputation for innovative and exciting classes and workshops, in particular for “at-risk” children.

Harris created his company on the belief that hip-hop is the most important original expression of a new generation. With its roots in the inner-city African-American and Latino communities, hip-hop is a contemporary indigenous form, one that expresses universal themes that extend beyond racial, religious and economic boundaries. His work encompasses diverse African-American traditions of the past, while simultaneously presenting the spirit of dance today.

Harris has received numerous fellowships and awards, including the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts, a nomination for the Laurence Oliver Award, a Pew Fellowship and a Pew Repertory Development Initiative Grant. He was voted one of the most influential people in the last 100 years of Philadelphia history.

Tickets are $6 for students, $14 for UNCW faculty/staff and senior citizens and $18 for all others and will be sold through Kenan Auditorium box office at 910/962-3500 or 800/732-3643 outside the Wilmington area. Box office hours are from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday - Friday.

The UNCW Arts in Action Performance Series is sponsored by the University Union at UNCW and funded in part by UNCW student fees. The Arts in Action Performance Series seeks to culturally enrich, educate and entertain both students and the general public through the presentation of diverse programs featuring professional, high-quality performing artists.
