UNCW Chemistry in top 25 nationally

Wilmington, N.C.—According to annual rankings, the University of North Carolina Wilmington is ranked in the top 25 in the nation for the production of American Chemical Society-certified bachelor’s of science chemistry graduates. This puts UNC Wilmington’s ranking in the top four percent of 664 accredited programs in the U.S. for the production of the ACS-certified chemistry graduates.

In the rankings, published in Chemistry and Engineering News, UNCW tied with Brigham Young University and University of Texas at El Paso. Carnegie Melon University and University of California-Davis narrowly beat Wilmington’s showing.

Within North Carolina, UNC Wilmington is tied with UNC-Charlotte as the largest producers of master’s of science graduates in chemistry. In the realm of undergraduate degrees, UNCW is the third largest producer of chemistry graduates in North Carolina, after UNC-Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University.

The numbers compiled by ACS were from the 2002-03 academic year, when UNCW graduated 34 chemistry bachelor’s students and 11 master’s students. In 2004-05 academic year, UNCW has 144 undergraduate chemistry majors and 34 graduate students.
