New Trustees Appointed
Wilmington, N.C. –Bob King, Wendy Murphy, Linda Pearce and George Teague have been appointed by the UNC Board of Governors to serve on the University of North Carolina Wilmington Board of Trustees. Charles Evans, who was re-elected by the BOG to a second four-year term, completes his first four-year term on June 30. Wendy Murphy was appointed to the Board of Trustees to serve the remainder of the unexpired term of trustee Linda Upperman Smith who resigned effective Feb. 26. Murphy will be eligible for re-election when that term expires June 30, 2007.
Bob King, a Wilmington native and a 1966 graduate of Wilmington College, has been president of Bob King Pontiac-GMC, Inc. since 1972. He has served two terms on the board of the UNCW Foundation, as well as being a member and former chair of UNCW Alumni Association. A merit scholarship for UNCW was established in his name. He is also a supporter of many other local and regional organizations.
Linda A. Pearce, executive director of Elderhaus, Inc., received her bachelor’s in English/Spanish at North Carolina College at Durham and her master’s at the University of the District of Columbia. She is a state visitor on the Duke University Minority Advisory Committee on Alzheimer’s Disease and the Eastern District representative of the NC Adult Day Care Association and a board member of the NC Association on Aging. She is or has been an active member of numerous Wilmington area boards and committees.
George Teague, who was raised in Morganton, N.C., and has had a private law practice in Raleigh, N.C., since 1975, was a Morehead Scholar and received his bachelor’s at UNC Chapel Hill and his J.D. at Vanderbilt University Law School where he was an associate editor of the Law Review. His community activities include membership in the UNCW Board of Visitors since 1998.
Wendy Murphy received her bachelor’s in elementary education from UNC Wilmington in 1993. She had taught language arts and social studies at Harrells Christian Academy. She has been an active member of the Duplin County Education Foundation and is the Harrells Christian Academy volunteer and special events Coordinator. She resides in Wallace, NC.
As of June 30, 2005, A.P. Carlton, Larry Dagenhart and Katherine Moore will have completed two consecutive four-year terms, which is the limit of eligibility.
The Board of Trustees provides oversight to assure that the university performs at a high level of excellence and serves the state in a way that will complement the activities of the other institutions. The UNCW board has 12 members who can serve a four-year term. The governor appoints four members and the other eight are appointed by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors. The 13th trustee member is the president of the Student Government Association. Bradley Ballou, president-elect of the Student Government Association, will be a member of the UNCW Board of Trustees after his inauguration on April 12. Ballou is a sophomore from Cary, N.C., majoring in political science.
