April 11, 2004

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Stompin’ at the Savoy, an annual fundraising effort to increase merit scholarships that promote the diversity of students at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, April 23 at the Seahawk Grill, Warwick Center, on the UNCW campus. The Electric Image Band will provide live music. Tickets are $50 per person and include heavy hors d’oeuvres and beverages.

Proceeds will be used to endow a scholarship to honor the Williston Senior High School Alumni Association. Williston was the African-American high school in Wilmington that closed in 1968. Since the school’s closure, the alumni association and various classes have raised money for college scholarships for descendants of Williston graduates.

More than $115,000 have been raised during the five years since the first Stompin’ at the Savoy event. Money raised the first year supported the UNCW Upperman African American Cultural Center. Through corporate donations, gifts from alumni, faculty, staff and friends, and previous ticket sales, three scholarships were established over the next four years: the Ralph Parker Endowed Scholarship, the Douglas Johnson Endowed Scholarship and the Wachovia Bank Endowed Scholarship.

For more information or to purchase tickets, please contact the UNCW Office of the Chancellor at 910.962.3030. All tickets must be purchased in advance.
