Wilmington, N.C. – University of North Carolina Wilmington Provost Paul Hosier today announced the appointment of Norman Bemelmans, director of Kenan Auditorium since 2001, to the newly established position of director of cultural arts. “UNCW established this position to further its commitment to the cultural arts both on campus and within the community and region,” Dr. Hosier said.
Mr. Bemelmans earned a Bachelor of Music Performance at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1977 and was a professional pianist prior to beginning a career in public radio. From 1984 to 1989, he was the first music director at WHQR-FM in Wilmington. He then moved to WSVH-FM in Savannah, Ga., where he was program director then general manager. In 1992 he became assistant director/program director for the Peach State Public Radio Network in Atlanta, and from 1993 to 2000 he was executive director of Peach State Public Radio Network.
Responsibilities of the director will include:
• performing cultural arts outreach and serving as a liaison to the local community and the region; • identifying and securing opportunities for strategic partnerships between UNCW and regional arts organizations; • assisting in promoting and marketing university arts programming; and • coordinating scheduling, technical staffing, ticketing and maintenance activities at Kenan Auditorium, the Cultural Arts facility now under construction, and any future performance facilities on the UNCW campus.
“Given the extraordinary level of talent and creativity on our campus, this is a particularly exciting time to be involved with the arts at the university,” said Mr. Bemelmans. “I believe we can play an even more dynamic role in the vibrant cultural life of our community, and look forward to working with colleagues on campus and throughout the region towards that goal.”
