The vibrant, non-stop artistic activity will give local residents and visitors alike top flight entertainment and mind food at reasonable costs, with most events taking place in air conditioned Kenan Auditorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Headline performers include Banu Gibson, one of the country’s leading jazz vocalists, performing music of Cole Porter June 18 with her trio in I Get a Kick Out of Cole. Also Marcus Roberts, legendary jazz performer, will pay a return visit to the UNCW campus July 1.
Artistic life at UNC Wilmington is not widely known or appreciated. This summer ARTSfest is a new endeavor designed to showcase, under one umbrella, artistic and cultural programs that were already planned. By packaging them together, UNCW will market the programs more aggressively to stimulate greater public interest.
“I am thrilled that UNCW is able to showcase these various events in a coordinated way this summer and to share this wide variety of artistic talent available to us with all of southeastern North Carolina,” commented Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo.
One of UNCW’s seven strategic goals is to serve the region. Providing quality arts and cultural events is one way to serve the community as well as students. Several concerts offered as part of ARTSfest are actually public performances associated with summer workshops for middle and high school students.
At a news conference today announcing ARTSfest, Provost Paul Hosier invited the community to be a part of the vibrant programming planned during UNCW ARTSfest.
Media partners for UNCW ARTSfest 2005 are WHQR public radio, WWAY-TV3, and Star-News.
