Wilmington, NC –UNCW Presents announces its Leadership Lecture Series 2005-06 lineup. Featuring distinguished speakers that cross disciplinary boundaries, the series will explore the political, cultural, and economic issues relevant today. Most lectures are Mondays at 7 p.m. in Kenan Auditorium, unless otherwise noted, and are followed by a question and answer period and book signing.
Eric Schlosser, Wednesday, September 28
“Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal”
Eric Schlosser is the author of the national best-seller, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All American Meal. Schlosser uncovers the inner workings of the fast food industry, and argues how fast food has been a revolutionary force in American life, transforming America’s diet and economy, workforce and popular culture. He writes, “What we eat has changed more in the last forty years than in the last forty thousand, yet Americans know frightfully little about how that food is made, where, by whom, and at what cost.” His intensive archival research and first-hand reporting have established him as one of America’s leading cultural critics. Co-presented with UNCW Health Promotion
Jane Elliott, Monday, October 24
“Anatomy of Prejudice”
Jane Elliott is the adaptor of the “Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes” discrimination experiment, a sensitizing exercise in which participants are labeled inferior or superior based on the color of their eyes. The experiment began in a third-grade classroom in all-white, all-Christian Riceville, Iowa, immediately after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It has been repeated with dramatic results with children and adults throughout the country. Those who have been through this exercise have said it is an emotionally significant and life-changing experience. This ground breaking exercise in the pinnacle of all other diversity programming in the country today. Co-presented with the Upperman African American Cultural Center
Paul Solman, Monday, February 20
“The Economics of Healthcare”
Emmy-award winning correspondent for “The News Hour with Jim Lehrer” Paul Solman, has been discussing business and economics for over 25 years. In his lecture, Solman will discuss the crisis of an aging population, both the generational dimension (will the young pay for the old?) and the class dimension (will the rich pay for the rest?), addressing the miracles of modern medicine, wealth and how it is spent, free-market fundamentalism, and the baby boom. With energy and wit Solman engages and empowers his audiences, making business and economics both comprehensible and fun.
David Halberstam, Monday, March 20
“America & the World: New Challenges in a Time of Uncertainty”
One of the most distinguished social and political commentators in America, David Halberstam won a Pulitzer Prize at age 30 for his prophetic reporting in the early days of the Vietnam War. Reflecting his tenure as a major analyst on the American scene, 38 years later his bestseller, War in a Time of Peace , was a runner-up for the Pulitzer. The Wall Street Journal called it “Riveting, merciless…indispensable to anyone interested in that confused period between the Cold War and the Terrorist War about to begin.” Perhaps no other writer has so faithfully chronicled the profound changes in America in the second half of the 20th Century and the challenges of the 21st Century.
