WILMINGTON, N.C. - Louis Buttino has been named chair of the University of North Carolina Wilmington Department of Film Studies.
Now in his eleventh year at UNCW, Buttino began as a professor in the Department of Communication Studies and moved to the film studies department as the program expanded, creating a need for instructors. Buttino came to UNCW from St. John Fisher College, a small liberal arts Catholic school in Rochester, N.Y.
Buttino received a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University and master’s degrees from the University of Miami and Colgate Rochester Divinity School. He holds a doctorate from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.
“I’m delighted to be the new film studies department chair,” he said. “I have a great faculty and tremendous opportunities ahead of me to get our department some regional prominence.”
Buttino looks forward to having a larger film studies faculty, more equipment, more screening areas and student screen writing and film competitions.
“I very much appreciate the colleagues I have here,” said Buttino. “They have a lot of joy, along with the students in all departments.”
Buttino has been a documentary filmmaker for 24 years. His latest documentary, Broken Brotherhood: Vietnam & the Boys from Colgate will premiere in North Carolina at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11 in Kenan Auditorium. The screening is free and open to the public.
