Wilmington, N.C. – Due to recent minimal faculty and staff salary increases, Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo today announced that she would donate everything above a two percent salary increase to scholarships at UNCW.

The Board of Governors, meeting today in Chapel Hill, approved salary increases for chancellors. Chancellor DePaolo received an 8.98 percent increase recognizing her outstanding performance. DePaolo’s annual salary was increased from $210,125 to $228,995. The result of her decision will mean $14,663 to be divided among two pools of scholarship money.

She is supporting the Staff Council Scholarship, an annually funded scholarship created in spring 2005 for permanent staff members and/or their immediate family members who are taking classes at UNCW, and the UNCW Faculty Merit Scholarship, created by the Faculty Senate Advancement Committee in March 2004, with a goal of becoming endowed. The recipients, who will be participants in the Honors Program, will be called Faculty Scholars.

“Due to the limited salary increases for faculty and staff, I felt compelled to donate any raise in excess of two percent to support scholarships created by faculty and staff,” DePaolo said.

“We are appreciative of all gifts to the university,” said Mary Gornto, vice chancellor for university advancement, “and particularly for the leadership shown by the chancellor in her personal support for scholarships. Her exceedingly generous gift demonstrates in a very tangible way her commitment to helping UNCW meet one of its greatest needs, raising more scholarship money.”
