Wilmington, N.C. – The University of North Carolina Wilmington Collaboration for Assault Response and Education (CARE) is a new campus resource center that offers a variety of intervention programs, training, and education in the campaign against violent behaviors, sexual assault, relationship abuse and harassment.

CARE works to assist students who have been victims of abuse or assault by providing supportive services, which include crisis response, consultation and individual advocacy.

The center collaborates with both on- and off-campus constituents in an active effort to raise violence awareness and create a safe, educated campus environment. CARE campus partners include University Police, the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling Center, Health Services, the Women’s Resource Center and Housing and Residential Life. The CARE coordinators maintain a strong link to CROSSROADS, the UNCW Substance Abuse Prevention and Education Program, and the Counseling Center. The office works with community agencies such as the Rape Crisis Center and Domestic Violence Shelter and Services.

Currently, CARE is sponsoring the UNCW Clothesline Project, a national movement that uses t-shirts to honor or remember victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. T-shirts are on display by the University Union and on the campus commons from Nov. 14-18. On Wednesday, Nov. 16, CARE will provide a safe space for people to make t-shirts and then hold a dedication ceremony.

Rebecca Caldwell coordinates the prevention and education component of CARE. Caldwell also serves as the director of CROSSROADS. Under her leadership, the program has developed as a comprehensive substance abuse prevention program in a higher education setting. In fall 2004, CROSSROADS received the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week award from the Inter-Association Task Force for excellence in year-round alcohol prevention programming. In summer 2005, CROSSROADS began a two-year project entitled “Changing a High-Risk Drinking Culture through the Lens of Gender,” which was the top project in a national grant competition funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

The program’s long-standing commitment to partner with communities on prevention for high school students has received over one million dollars in state and federal funds. Currently the CROSSROADS high school prevention program is engaged in a national multi-site trial to generate evidence to place the program on the national model program list.

Caldwell received a Master of Arts in Counseling and Human Resource Development from South Dakota State University and a B.A. in psychology from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, both summa cum laude.

Dee Casey coordinates the crisis response, intervention and training component of CARE. She divides her time between the CARE office and the Counseling Center. Casey has been with UNCW since 1988 and specializes in working with students who are concerned about substance abuse as well as family, relationship, sexual assault and other trauma issues. She has also facilitated numerous national and regional workshops that focus on addiction, relationship abuse and sexual assault. She has had significant training in trauma response and will be an individual advocate for victims as well as a consultant for concerned others. Casey specializes in the use of psychodramatic techniques in working with classes and student groups.

She is on call in the CARE office, as well as after hours through the University Police.

Casey has a Master of Science in psychology from Winthrop University and a B.S. in education from Southern Illinois University.

CARE is located on the second floor of Westside Hall, along with the Counseling Center, Student Health Services, and CROSSROADS. The office may be reached at 910/962.CARE or accessed online at www.uncw.edu/care. For more information on the UNCW Clothesline Project, contact Rebecca Caldwell at 910/962.4136.
