Wilmington, N.C. - University of North Carolina Wilmington professors Diane Levy and Kate Bruce were surprised by Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo and guests at a reception for the initiation of the Levy-Bruce Honors Scholars Endowed Scholarship on Dec. 3.

The scholarship recognizes their outstanding work in establishing and building the Honors Scholars Program at UNCW. Levy, the program's founding director, led the way for the program to become a part of the element of academic integrity at UNCW. Bruce's leadership has fostered scholarship and research initiatives that make this honors program one of the outstanding programs in the area. "These two women stand as great examples of the academic excellence in teaching and research that make this institution great," said DePaolo.

Levy founded the Honors Scholars Program in 1994. Her pioneering work as director of the program expanded what was then a senior departmental honors program into a four-year university honors experience for students. She joined the UNCW Sociology and Criminal Justice faculty in 1977. Her research and work in Gender Stratification, Sociology of Women and Work, Tourism, and Family have brought her both personal and academic accolades. Her involvement and dedication has led her to Barbados, Swansea and London, where she participated in research and exploration experiences with students. She has mentored honors students and serves the broader university community on faculty senate as the advancement chair, and as interim chair of her department.

In 1999, Bruce was hired to continue the work Levy began. As a professor of psychology and former Associate Dean of the Graduate School, Bruce's background in animal behavior, human sexuality, and AIDS is firmly rooted in research and scholarly work that has involved a number of undergraduates in honors projects. This background helped her propel the Honors Scholars Program in a direction that is flourishing today with high-level undergraduate research. She is student-centered and focused, and the result has been extraordinary research and scholarship, and real student community and involvement. The Honors Scholars Program is now a major recruiting element for UNCW. Bruce has also brought national attention to the Honors Scholars Program by serving as the President-Elect of the National Collegiate Honors Council and hosting the 2003 Southern Regional Honors Conference in Wilmington.
