UNCW Celebrates Homage to Mozart, Jan. 21-27

Wilmington, N.C. - University of North Carolina Wilmington announces Homage to Mozart, a week-long celebration commemorating the 250th birthday anniversary of one of the world's best-loved composers. The festival features many of the region's finest ensembles and soloists, plus special guests of national renown.

Born on Jan. 27, 1756, in Austria, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed a multitude of masterworks during his brief life span, which continue to inspire, enthrall and enrich the world.

Homage to Mozart features special performances by the UNCW Opera Outreach Project, the Wilmington Symphony, the Carolina Piano Trio, UNCW Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, and the UNCW Wind Symphony, culminating on the composer's birth date with a performance by the North Carolina Symphony under the direction of the internationally-acclaimed violinist and conductor Joseph Silverstein. Film screenings and other educational/outreach activities are included in the schedule, all designed to highlight the universal appeal of Mozart's music.

UNCW Opera Outreach Project

8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, Kenan Auditorium

The evening includes a selection of favorite scenes and arias from Mozart's operatic masterworks, featuring performances by the university's resident opera ensemble, joined by UNCW Director of Vocal Studies, Nancy King (soprano), pianist Patricia Ainspac and a line-up of special alumni guest artists, including sopranos Rochelle Bard, Marina DeRatmiroff, Bridgid Eversole and Laura Powell, as well as Monica Sillero (mezzo-soprano), Melvin Ezzell (tenor) and Chandler Molbert (baritone). $5 general admission (free to UNCW students with a valid ID)

UNCW Chorale

Featuring the UNCW Concert Choir and Chamber Singers

8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, St. Paul's Episcopal Church

Joe Hickman, UNCW director of choral studies, leads the UNCW Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, along with an orchestral ensemble, in a program highlighting some of Mozart's most profound works, including Regina Coeli, Exultate Jubilate, and the Coronation Mass. Several area soloists will also be featured, including Ellen Parrish, Nancy Jones, Melvin Ezzell, Stephen Brand, Sarah Edwards, Linda Kessler and Nancy King. Free and open to the public.

Film Screening of Ingmar Bergman's The Magic Flute

7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, Kenan Auditorium

Sung in Swedish with English subtitles, Bergman's film The Magic Flute provides a comical, behind-the-scenes look at the backstage dramatics during a live performance in Stockholm's historic Drottningholm Theatre, and is a joyous tribute both to Mozart's incomparable music and to the art of the cinema from one of the 20th-century's most evocative film makers. Free and open to the public.

Wilmington Symphony Orchestra & UNCW Wind Symphony

8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, Kenan Auditorium

Steven Errante conducts the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra in the Overture to "Don Giovanni", the Romanza from the Piano Concerto #20 in d minor (featuring soloist Karen Rice), and excerpts from "The Abduction from the Seraglio" (featuring soprano Nancy King). The second half of the program is devoted to the Serenade in B-flat, "Gran Partita," in a performance by the UNCW Wind Symphony. $5 general admission (free to UNCW students with a valid ID).

The Carolina Piano Trio

8 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 25, Kenan Auditorium

One of the region's premier chamber ensembles, the Carolina Piano Trio (Jacqui Carrasco, violin; Elizabeth Anderson, cello; Barbara McKenzie, piano) will perform works from and inspired by the Austrian composer. Hailed for their passionate musical expression and fiery virtuosity, this dynamic trio performs in major venues throughout the Southeast. $8 general admission ($5 UNCW students and seniors).

UNCW Department of Music Faculty Concert

8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, Kenan Auditorium

A varied program of solo and chamber music featuring some of Mozart's most enchanting works and performed by UNCW Department of Music faculty members: Nancy King (soprano), Mary Jo White (flute), Frank Bongiorno (saxophone), Rachel Brunjes (violin), Joby Brunjes (viola), Robert Nathanson (guitar), Richard Thomas (cello) Barry David Salwen (piano), and Patricia Ainspac (piano). $5 general admission (free to UNCW students with a valid ID)

The North Carolina Symphony

Featuring acclaimed conductor and violinist Joseph Silverstein

8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, Kenan Auditorium

The North Carolina Symphony brings a week of Mozart musical celebration to a stirring conclusion. Joined in this special gala performance by internationally acclaimed guest conductor and violin soloist Joseph Silverstein, the orchestra will perform an all-Mozart program which includes the Rondo in C; the Violin Concerto #4 in D; the Symphony #22 in C, and the Symphony #36 ("Linz").
