Wilmington, N.C. - Dr. John Walker Myers, associate professor of art and associate director of the honors scholars program at UNCW, was honored recently with the establishment of a new scholarship in his name.
The John Walker Myers Scholarship in Art History was created to recognize his outstanding work in building the art history program since his appointment in 1980 as the sole art historian on staff.
"In many ways, John IS the Art History Department even with the expansion we have seen over the years," said Don Furst, chair of the Art and Art History Department at a reception honoring Myers. "While he will soon leave us as he passes through phased retirement, the scholarship will provide something permanent with his name on it to keep alive his legacy for generations of students to come."
During his tenure at UNCW, Myers has served art history faculty member, chair of the department, and as associate director of the honors scholars program. He has also served the community as a member and president of the board of directors of St. John's Museum of Art (now the Cameron Art Museum), as well member of the board of the Arts Council of the Lower Cape Fear, and many other roles throughout his career.
At UNCW, Myers brought the slide collection into the digital era with his development of the Digital Image Database Lab. He also helped develop a stand-alone major in Art History, and has mentored and nurtured art history colleagues who have joined the program.
The scholarship fund has three years to reach endowment level of $25,000. When fully endowed, the scholarship will provide tuition assistance to outstanding student majors in Art History.
"Scholarships are the most meaningful way to honor a person at UNCW while serving the needs of our students from across the state and beyond," said Marla Rice-Evens, UNCW associate vice chancellor for development.
