Wilmington, NC - Paul Solman, the popular business and economics correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, will speak at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20 in Kenan Auditorium at University of North Carolina Wilmington. His lecture, "The Economics of Healthcare," will examine the crisis of an aging population. The talk is part of the UNCW Presents Leadership Lecture Series. It will be followed by a question and answer session.

Solman has illuminated hundreds of economic stories on topics both somber (NAFTA, Cuba, Social Security reform) and light (the workings of the circus and the NFL). "What I'm looking for is the most memorable image I can find to beguile audiences and plant the information into their heads," said Solman.

In 2004, Solman won his second Peabody Award for his NewsHour report, "Jobless Recovery: Non-Working Numbers." He was praised for explaining complicated economic issues with clarity, humor and an investigative spirit. He has won several Emmys, most recently for his reporting on Microsoft, and has been named a member of TV Guide's All-Star News "dream-team."

Solman began his career in business journalism as a Nieman Fellow, studying at Harvard Business School in 1976. He has been the business reporter at WGBH Boston since 1977 and was the co-originator and executive editor of PBS's business documentary series, Enterprise.

A graduate of Brandeis University and former editor at Mother Jones magazine, Solman has also been a cabdriver, management consultant and kindergarten teacher.

Solman has served on the Harvard Business School faculty, teaching media, finance and business history. He co-authored the 1983 book, Life and Death on the Corporate Battlefield, which has been printed in Japanese and German editions.

"Solman uses real examples to illustrate economic concepts," said Shannon Hooker, assistant director of UNCW Presents. "He gives his audiences a look at how economics shape our daily lives as well as our pocketbooks."

By inviting a speaker to the campus, the university does not endorse any particular position.
