WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNCW and Celebrate Wilmington! Inc. have teamed up with Meadowlark Lemon, legendary basketball star and youth outreach advocate, for a benefit luncheon to support scholarships for underserved youth to attend the university's enrichment programs and summer camps.

Lemon, known as "the Clown Prince of Basketball" during his long, successful career with the Harlem Globetrotters, will be the guest of honor at the luncheon, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., on Friday, March 3 at the UNCW Warwick Center Ballroom. Tickets cost $40 per person and $75 per couple. Corporate sponsorships, available for $500, include a table for eight guests and a group photograph with Lemon. To register, please call 910.962.3195.

"Meadowlark Lemon has graciously agreed to help UNCW and Celebrate Wilmington! Inc. offer underserved youth more opportunities to experience the power of learning on an ambitious new level," said Stephen Demski, vice chancellor for the Division of Public Service and Continuing Studies.

Proceeds from the luncheon will provide partial to full scholarships for children to attend one of several educational enrichment programs or summer camps offered at UNCW. Scholarship recipients could participate in MarineQuest, UNCW Kids College or several other university camps. More information about the programs and camps is available online at www.uncw.edu/summercamps.

"This is the first time we have been able to offer scholarships where the kids get to choose which program they want to attend," said Kathy McDaniel, youth programs coordinator with the UNCW Division for Public Service and Continuing Studies. "Meadowlark has volunteered to do this luncheon because he believes in children and giving them a chance."

Lemon, an ordained minister who grew up in Wilmington's "Brooklyn" neighborhood, travels the United States to promote youth outreach. During his visit home, Celebrate Wilmington! Inc. will dedicate a star to him on the city's Walk of Fame.
