WILMINGTON, N.C. - ZZ Packer will give a reading at 8 p.m. on Feb. 23 in King Hall 101 at University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Packer is the author of the highly acclaimed collection of stories Drinking Coffee Elsewhere (Riverhead Books, 2003). She is a current visiting writer in the UNCW Department of Creative Writing, and is teaching a month-long fiction workshop. Her reading, part of the Buckner Reading Series, is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow the talk. Books will be available for purchase.

Packer graduated from the Iowa Writers' Workshop and was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. She lives in San Francisco and is working on her first novel.

Stories from Drinking Coffee Elsewhere were featured in the New Yorker's Debut Fiction issue in 2000, and the New York Times described the collection as "a world already populated by clamoring, sorrowing, eminently knowable people, and with the promise of more to come."

A sampling of reviews for ZZ Packer's works:

"[Packer] is a writer whose voice sounds thrillingly new and different." O: The Oprah Magazine

"[Packer] has a commanding sense of character and setting, and often thrilling usage of language and style." The San Francisco Chronicle

"The writing here is crisp and weighted with vivid metaphors." The Chicago Tribune

"Brilliant prose. Unforgettable characters. Eight short stories. All by ZZ Packer. You do the math." Marie Claire
