Wilmington, NC - Hubbard Street 2 (HS2), the second company of the world-famous Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, will present eclectic, innovative and razor-sharp contemporary dance at the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 8 p.m., Saturday, March 18 in Kenan Auditorium. There will be a meet the artist session immediately following the performance. The event is presented as part of UNCW Presents Arts in Action Performance Series.
Hubbard Street 2 (HS2), under the leadership of Artistic Director Julie Nakagawa Bottcher, is a company of six dancers between the ages of 17 and 25 who perform a repertoire of works by some of the nation's most promising young choreographers. HS2 reaches more than 35,000 people annually through performances in schools, community centers, and theatres. Since its inception in 1997, the company has become a respected training ground for young professional dancers and choreographers, a major component of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago's Education & Community programs, a resource for new dancers for HSDC's main company, and a performance company in its own right.
As part of its mission to identify and nurture young choreographers, HS2 initiated a national choreographic competition in 1999. Every summer, the competition provides each of three winners with a one-week residency to create an original work within the company. It is these new dances that the company will perform on the Kenan Auditorium stage in March 2006.
Parent company of HS2, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, under the dynamic leadership of Artistic Director Jim Vincent, is among the most original forces in contemporary dance. Critically acclaimed for its exuberant, athletic, and innovative repertory, HSDC presents performances that inspire, challenge, and engage audiences worldwide.
Come see why the Chicago Sun-Times calls the company "pure bliss, pure movement, and pure joy."
HS2 will conduct a free master class, at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18 in the Warwick Center Ballroom on the UNCW campus. For space reservations, please call 962-7971 or email artsinaction@uncw.edu.
