WILMINGTON, NC - The University of North Carolina Wilmington kicks off the Year of the Arts celebration and re-opens the newly renovated Kenan Auditorium with a tribute to one of the greatest composers and musicians of the 20th century. Mood Indigo: A Tribute to Duke Ellington begins at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22 in Kenan Auditorium. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $18 for senior citizens, $10 for students and free to UNCW students with a valid ID.

Mood Indigo: A Tribute to Duke Ellington was created and produced through the joint efforts of the Cape Fear Jazz Society, WHQR-91.3 FM, and UNCW's Departments of Creative Writing and Music and Office of Cultural Arts.

The performance features jazz vocalists Susan Reeves and Prince Taylor along with the Cape Fear Jazz Orchestra under the direction of UNCW Department of Music Chair Frank Bongiorno and the UNCW Concert Choir under the direction of Joe Hickman. Written and narrated by biographer and UNCW Department of Creative Writing Chair Philip Furia, the performance reviews the 50-year career of "The Duke" by combining the stories and music of the famous composer with a projected pictorial history of Ellington and his times created by Laurie Patterson of UNCW's Department of Computer Science.

Highlighting the remarkable variety found in Ellington's music, Mood Indigo moves from the early jazz band tunes to the now classic standards "Satin Doll," "Sophisticated Lady" and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got that Swing)," concluding with excerpts from the powerful liturgical works created during the latter part of the composer's life - a fitting tribute to an incomparable musician whose legacy continues to resonate worldwide.
