Bongiorno Presented Distinguished Faculty Award at UNCW

Wilmington, N.C. - Frank Bongiorno, a professor and chair of the University of North Carolina Wilmington Department of Music, was presented the 5th Annual J. Marshall Crews Distinguished Faculty Award at the first faculty meeting of the 2006-2007 academic year. The award was presented on behalf of the UNCW Alumni Association and Past Chair's Council. The Past Chair's Council is comprised of UNCW alumni that have served as chairpersons for the Alumni Association throughout its 36 years.

Bongiorno has taught saxophone and jazz studies at UNCW since 1982. His students have received national and international recognition by such organizations as Down Beat magazine and Jazzfest USA, among others. He is an active recitalist, orchestral soloist, jazz artist and clinician and has performed throughout the United States and abroad. He also performs regularly as a member of the renowned Ryoanji Duo, which features Robert Nathanson on classical guitar.

He says, "I am honored to receive this prestigious award and appreciate the UNCW Alumni Association for this recognition. Also, many thanks to Dr. Crews for his work, as well as his commitment to UNCW over the years. I have been truly fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with so many fine students throughout my tenure at UNCW and am pleased to be recognized by those who have made as much an impact on my life as I have on their lives."

Bongiorno's solo compact disc recordings include the critically acclaimed Classic Saxophone, Classic Saxophone, Vol. 2: Musica da camera, and Images (The Ryoanji Duo). He has also recorded a jazz play along CD of original jazz compositions as well as a master class CD on learning to improvise using transcriptions for Jazz Player Magazine and a saxophone vibrato master class CD released by the Saxophone Journal.

His publications include classical saxophone transcriptions, original compositions for jazz combo, paper presentations at national conferences, as well as over 100 articles and reviews in such publications as the Saxophone Symposium, North Carolina Music Educators Journal, the National Association of College Wind & Percussion Instructors, The Saxophone Journal, Jazz Player Magazine, and Popular Musicians. He has been featured in a front cover interview in the January/February 1993 issue of the Saxophone Journal and is listed in the International Who's Who in Music, Seventeenth Edition and the Outstanding Musicians of the 20th Century. He earned a Bachelor of Music at Ithaca College, a Master of Music from the University of North Texas and a Doctor of Music from Indiana University.

Crews, who joined Wilmington College in 1948, served the college and university for more than 30 years in several academic and administrative roles. In addition to teaching mathematics, Crews served as an academic dean, registrar and admissions director prior to his official retirement in 1981. He was in attendance for the award presentation.

Nominees for the J. Marshall Crews Distinguished Faculty Award must be or have been a full-time faculty member at the university for a minimum of seven years. Nominations are accepted from university faculty, staff or students as well as alumni and members of the community. The award is based on service, student support effort, leadership roles, and community service/ outreach efforts. The winner receives a $500 cash stipend and a medallion.
