Wilmington, N.C. - The University of North Carolina Wilmington Campus Community Coalition (C3) recently launched the "Know B4 U Go" campaign to help educate and inform students and the local community about the consequences of purchasing alcohol while under the legal age and the effects and consequences of drinking and driving. This campaign will continue throughout the academic year.

The coalition has already implemented several strategies to make the campaign a success, including a four-week radio campaign featuring two public service announcements on all six of the Next Media radio stations in addition to two ads in heavy rotation on WAZO FM - 107.5, a station that is listened to by a large number of college students and younger adults. The media spots inform and educate college students and others under the age of 25 on the effects of drinking and driving and using a fake I.D.

The coalition will be distributing door hangers throughout the residence halls of UNCW and area apartment complexes providing information people should know before they decide to have their first drink. The door hanger reads, "…learn about alcohol enforcement laws in your community. As a UNCW student, you are now a member of the Wilmington community, subject to the same laws as any other citizen." It also provides consequences that could be associated with drinking.

"The cost associated with underage drinking and impaired driving goes way beyond just the financial cost. We realize that some people are not well informed about the overall affects alcohol can have on their mind and body. There are some who know about the affects and about the laws relating to inappropriate access and use, but they don't always respond according to what they know," said Cynthia Mitchell, outreach coordinator for Crossroads and chair of the Campus Community Coalition. "We hope this campaign will serve to both educate and reinforce knowledge about alcohol's potential effects, make people aware of alcohol enforcement laws, and empower people make better decisions before they take the first drink. Everyone should Know B4 U Go."

The UNCW Campus Community Coalition (C3) is a collaborative effort between community members of Wilmington and New Hanover County and UNCW that addresses issues such as the purchasing and high consumption of alcohol by persons under the age of 21. The Campus Community Coalition (C3) has existed since 2001 and is made up of representatives from New Hanover County Schools, churches, retail stores, police and sheriff departments, highway patrol, alcohol law enforcement, community agencies, community leaders, and university staff and students.
