WILMINGTON, N.C. - The UNCW Board of Trustees today approved tuition increases for the 2007-08 academic year in the amount of $192.00 for in-state students and $220.00 for out-of-state students. Fee increases totaling $46.65 for athletics, health services, student activities and transportation also were approved. The increases are within the guidelines set by the UNC Board of Governors in October.

"The revenue generated from these increases will provide funding to assist UNCW's efforts to strengthen the first two of our seven strategic goals, which are to create the most powerful learning experience possible for our students and to recruit, retain and develop quality faculty and staff," said Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo. "To meet those goals, we must offer more opportunities for need-based financial aid, progress toward our long-term goal of achieving a student-faculty ratio of 16 to 1, attract the highest quality faculty to our campus, and retain the excellent faculty we currently have."

The increases will generate additional revenue in the amount of $2,093,892 from tuition and $500,648 from fees. Of the tuition increase, UNCW proposes to use 41 percent to implement a Financial Aid Guarantee program for its most needy students, 29 percent to attract and retain faculty by increasing the faculty salary pool by 1 percent, 17 percent to increase the number of faculty positions, 6 percent to attract and retain high quality non-faculty EPA professional staff, and 7 percent to support progress toward ensuring the reliability of and protection of electronic information and data networks.

A committee appointed by the chancellor and including members representing students, faculty and staff developed and recommended the increases, basing its recommendations on funding of critical university needs. UNCW administrators reviewed those recommendations and made some modifications.

Despite the increase, UNCW's total tuition and fee amount for resident undergraduates will remain within the bottom quarter of its public peers. Non-resident undergraduate costs will remain below the top quarter for this same higher education peer group.

Tuition and fee requests from all of the UNC campuses will be presented to the Board of Governors for final approval at its February 2007 meeting.
