Wilmington, N.C. - University of North Carolina Wilmington continues its university-wide Year of the Arts celebration with a performance by the acclaimed Carolina Piano Trio at 8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 13, in the new Cultural Arts Building Recital Hall. The performance will give audiences an opportunity to preview the new state-of-the-art performance facility before the official Grand Opening celebration, which will take place from Jan. 25 through Jan. 28.
The Carolina Piano Trio, one of the region's finest chamber ensembles, will perform works by Arvo Pärt, along with Beethoven's "Ghost" Trio and the Piano Trio No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich. The ensemble was formed by three nationally acclaimed soloists (Jacqui Carrasco, violin; Elizabeth Anderson, cello; and Barbara McKenzie, piano) in 1998 as the core ensemble for the American Music Festival and the Chamber Music Society of Wilmington. Hailed for their passionate musical expression and fiery virtuosity, this dynamic trio performs in major venues throughout the Southeast. Their creative programming and unique educational residencies have received funding from the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, the North Carolina Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. The trio last performed at UNCW in January 2006 as artists-in residence during the Homage to Mozart festival. They recently completed a residency at the Reynolda House Museum of American Art in Winston-Salem.
