Wilmington, N.C. - The University of North Carolina Wilmington has received $350,000 from Harris Teeter and the Dickson Foundation, Inc., to support student health and wellness.
At 10 a.m. on April 3, the university will dedicate the Harris Teeter Fitness Center in the Student Recreation Center on campus. Tim McNeilly, campus recreation director, said, "Harris Teeter is actively supporting UNCW students' health by highlighting the importance of physical activity. The university will use this generous gift to update and maintain the fitness center equipment, and to enhance the exercise classes and other programs we offer."
Harris Teeter President Fred Morganthall said, "Harris Teeter believes in supporting education and wellness within the communities we serve. We hope the Harris Teeter Fitness Center will become a valuable resource for UNCW students."
Harris Teeter, based in Charlotte, N.C., owns supermarkets across the Carolinas and in Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, Florida and Tennessee. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Ruddick Corp.
The university and Harris Teeter have a long and successful partnership. The company has given to the Division of Student Affairs, the Watson School of Education, the N.C. Teachers Legacy Hall and athletic programs. The company's contributions during the last 10 years total nearly $100,000.
In 2002, UNCW became the first university invited to participate in the company's "Together in Education" program, which allows VIC card customers to designate educational institutions to receive a portion of the proceeds on Harris Teeter brand merchandise.
"The University of North Carolina Wilmington truly appreciates the generous support provided by Harris Teeter and the Dickson Foundation," said Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo. "The Harris Teeter Fitness Center is a wonderful resource for our students, faculty and staff. From the 'Together in Education' program to this latest gift, Harris Teeter has significantly enhanced the programs and services offered at UNCW."
