Wilmington, N.C. - Pat Howey, a veteran administrator who has served as UNC Wilmington's compliance/academics specialist and NCAA-designated senior woman administrator for the last 20 years, will assume leadership responsibilities within the athletic department, Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo announced Monday.

"Pat has an extensive history of valuable service to the university," said Chancellor DePaolo. "I am very grateful that she has agreed to assume leadership responsibilities within the athletic department as we proceed with a national search for an athletic director. I have full confidence that she will do an exemplary job with all facets of the department."

As Senior Associate Athletic Director and SWA, Howey handles eligibility guidelines for UNCW's 350 student-athletes and serves as the sports supervisor for men's basketball, women's basketball and softball. She also supervises the department's Athletic Academic Support Program and CHAMPS/Life Skills Program.

The Port City native serves as the department's liaison to many offices on campus and coordinates all community service, educational outreach and promotional activities for the program's student-athletes.

"I'm truly honored to have Chancellor DePaolo make this request," said Howey. "Our student-athletes, coaches and staff are known for their dedication on and off the field, and that will not change. We will continue our well-documented track record for academic and athletic excellence."

Howey was a member of the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification from 2002-06 and currently serves on the NCAA Academics/Eligibility/Compliance cabinet. An NCAA Peer Reviewer since 1996, she is also a member of the National Women's Basketball Coaches Association Issues Committee.

A member of the National Association of Collegiate Women's Athletic Administrators, Howey is a July 2005 graduate of the group's Institute for Athletics Executives. She was nominated for the YWCA's Women's of Achievement in 2004, and served on UNCW's Task Force on Education and Training Initiatives for Campus Violence Prevention in 2004.

Howey was a three-sport standout at John T. Hoggard High School, competing in softball, basketball and volleyball for the Vikings. She earned her B.S. Degree in Business Administration at UNC Chapel Hill in 1985 and completed her M.S. in Education from UNCW in 1993.
