Wilmington, N.C. - The Bernard Osher Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant to the University of North Carolina Wilmington to establish a scholarship program for non-traditional students.

The Osher Reentry Scholarship Program will provide tuition assistance to as many as 25 qualified students. The program is designed to serve students who have collegiate credits from a four-year institution, but who have not been enrolled in an educational degree program for at least five years due to circumstances beyond their control. Eligible students must be pursuing their first baccalaureate degree, must have high academic standing, must demonstrate financial need, and must have plans to enter and remain in the workforce for a significant amount of time. Osher Reentry Scholars may be enrolled as full-time or part-time undergraduates at UNC Wilmington.

"The Foundation is delighted with the university's commitment to addressing the specific needs of reentry students and is pleased to support its efforts in this regard," according to Mary Bitterman, president of the Bernard Osher Foundation.

UNCW and the Foundation have a strong partnership that includes the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), a program that provides adult learners with extensive educational opportunities, including short courses, seminars, lectures and travel excursions. The Foundation provides financial support for OLLI, and the UNCW Division for Public Service and Continuing Studies operates the program.

"By establishing a scholarship program for reentry students, the Osher Foundation has helped the university address very real needs," Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo said. "Reentry students must often fit their educational goals into lives overflowing with work and family responsibilities. UNCW is extremely committed to helping them complete their undergraduate degrees, and the Osher Reentry Scholarship Program will make our outstanding academic programs even more affordable for qualified students."
