Wilmington, N.C. - The Summer Jazz Workshop at the University of North Carolina Wilmington will feature trombonist and arranger Slide Hampton at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 19, in the Cultural Arts Building Recital Hall. Hampton will perform with members of the UNCW jazz faculty, including jazz workshops director Frank Bongiorno. Tickets are $10 for general admission and free to students with a valid I.D.
Hampton has stated that "the purpose of jazz is to help people realize their self worth and individuality." He has been dedicated to achieving that goal for more than 50 years. As an arranger, clinician and left-handed trombone player, Hampton has had one of the most distinguished careers in jazz. His music is rooted in the tradition of bebop, post-bebop jazz and improvisation. He has performed with and arranged for Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Art Blakely, Max Roach, Barry Harris, Maynard Ferguson, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis and Woody Herman.
In addition to performing, Hampton began a series of master classes at Harvard, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Indiana University, and worked with jazz cooperatives including Continuum. Concerned that the presence of the trombone in musical ensembles was diminishing, Hampton formed World of Trombones, an ensemble of nine trombones and a rhythm section, to recognize the importance of the instrument in jazz, classical and spiritual music. He has received two Grammy awards and the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award. More information on Slide Hampton is available at www.slidehampton.com.
Tickets are available at the Cultural Arts Building box office one hour prior to the performance. For more information, call 910.962.3415 or go to www.uncw.edu/music.
