Wilmington, N.C. - UNCW Presents proudly announces its 2007-08 Arts in Action Performance Series that builds on the excitement and success of previous years. UNCW Presents continues to bring the highest caliber professional performing artists on tour from around the world and across the spectrum of artistic disciplines to southeastern NC. Eight performing arts events and related outreach activities are scheduled September 2007 through April 2008 at UNCW's Kenan Auditorium unless otherwise noted.
The series opens Friday, September 21 featuring Afro-Colombian hip hop group ChocQuibTown. Heating up traditional Latin music with a volcanic deluge of reggae, funk and hip hop, the unstoppable ChocQuibTown is one of Colombia's most exciting and newest creative bands.
Whip-smart folk-pop rocker Erin McKeown performs as part of UNCW Family Weekend on Saturday, October 13. A gifted singer/songwriter with a deft touch on the guitar, mandolin, piano and banjo, Erin McKeown calls herself a mix between Django Reinhardt and G. Love. But even that description only scratches the surface of her music's sly lyrics and rip roaring swing.
Mandolinist Mike Marshall and violinist Darol Anger join with the Woodshop Folkestra to present an electrifying acoustic concert on Saturday, October 20. Considered two of the key players in the 30-year-old New American String Band movement they are helping to spearhead the most crucial developments in this quintessentially American art form. Together they continue their international musical odyssey begun in 1978 with the David Grisman Quintet and continuing to present, with innumerable collaborations along the way with some of the field's most important musicians. For the UNCW concert they are joined by five-time Grand National Fiddle Champions Tashina and Tristan Clarridge.
Called "The Keeper of Flamenco" by Dance Magazine, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana performs on Friday, October 26 at Thalian Hall. Known for their smoldering sensuality and polish, the group's powerful dancers and musicians address universal themes of pride, sorrow, love and death in their emotional performances. Co-presented with Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts.
Fall events wrap up with the Regina Carter Quintet on Thursday, November 1. The leading jazz violinist of our time, Regina Carter has put her indelible stamp on artists as diverse as Wynton Marsalis, Lauryn Hill, Cassandra Wilson, Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige and Dolly Parton. With her own band, Regina reaps praise for her unparalleled ability to integrate the finer elements of jazz, funk, African, Brazilian and soul music with an adventurous rhythmic sensibility.
The New Year opens with one of the world's most dynamic dance companies Garth Fagan Dance on Tuesday, March 11, blending Afro-Caribbean movement and energy with the speed and precision of ballet and the rule-breaking experimentation of the post-moderns. Jamaican-born choreographer Garth Fagan is best known as the Tony Award-winning choreographer of Broadway's The Lion King.
Four-time Grammy nominee Angélique Kidjo will perform on Wednesday, April 9. The charismatic songstress has cross-pollinated the West African traditions of her childhood in Benin with elements of American R&B, funk and jazz as well as influences from Europe and Latin America. She has collaborated with a diverse group of international artists like Santana, Dave Matthews, Alicia Keys, Josh Groban, Peter Gabriel and Joss Stone.
The series concludes with the sultry and exotic voice of Lila Downs on Friday, April 18. Featured in 2002's Frida and on the film's Grammy-nominated soundtrack, the Mexican-American chanteuse evokes the vibrant rhythms of her country's long and cherished folk-music legacy but adds hip, contemporary instrumentation and arrangements.
UNCW Presents is working toward crafting innovative outreach opportunities including master classes, lectures, demonstrations and more within the Wilmington community and with our partner community groups. Performances slated for possible community outreach efforts include
