Wilmington, N.C. - The Board of Directors of the United Way of the Cape Fear Area is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Rosemary DePaolo, chancellor of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, as the 2007 Campaign Chair.

Chancellor DePaolo's appointment will be announced at the annual Campaign Kickoff at Airlie Gardens on September 13. Although UNC Wilmington has participated in various leadership supporting positions in prior campaigns, DePaolo is the first leader from UNCW to chair the United Way's campaign in its 66-year history in the Wilmington area.

"I am honored to be able to continue UNCW's commitment to the United Way by chairing the campaign for 2007-08," said DePaolo. "Following the excellent leadership of Andy White last year, my commitment as campaign chair is to raise even more funds this year to enhance the ability of area non-profits to serve the Cape Fear Region." Andy White, president & CEO, GE Nuclear Energy, helped to raise more than $2.1 million as the 2006 United Way Campaign chair.

The kickoff theme this year is "One Community. Together, we do what matters." To showcase that theme, the evening will highlight nine (9) local corporations who will present the DePaolo with ceremonial checks totaling more than $1million dollars in initial campaign pledges.

"The United Way is thrilled to have these local companies and their employees show their commitment to this community by announcing their gifts at the kickoff," said Pamela Wyatt, president, United Way. "This level of corporate commitment, combined with the leadership of Chancellor DePaolo, will help us reach our goal of $2.3 million, which will benefit local programs that address the most pressing needs in the Cape Fear region."

One program benefiting from United Way funding is DREAMS Center for Arts Education. Students from their classes in Visual and Performing Arts for At-Risk Youth will perform a special drum presentation at this event for local dignitaries, area leaders, agency directors and community members.

The United Way and UNCW collaborate on a number of community-based programs including QENO, Quality Enhancement for Non-Profit Organizations, a UNCW-based organization that works with local non-profits to enhance efficiencies in their agencies and the community, and the Master's in Public Administration program (MPA) at UNCW.

Under the leadership of Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo, UNCW has developed a long-term strategic plan that is charting the university's course toward increased national preeminence. For the tenth straight year, the university was ranked among the top 10 public master's universities in the South by U.S.News & World Report. UNCW also received the 2008 "Best in the Southeast" designation by The Princeton Review.

"The United Way is very pleased to have the chancellor as our 2007 Campaign chair," said Pamela Wyatt. "She is an extremely strong leader in this community, and doing so many exciting things at UNCW. We are honored that she has agreed to guide the United Way and our campaign volunteers as we raise funds for our local communities in Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender Counties. Her involvement, guidance and leadership will help raise funds for local needs to be invested in local programs that will in turn improve lives and strengthen our entire region."
