Want information on UNCW? Now there's an iPhone application for that. University of North Carolina Wilmington undergraduate students Ricardo Valea and Phillip Whisenhunt have created the university's first iPhone application. Posted last week, the UNCW Mobile application is one of the first university applications in the world to be available on iTunes.
This free iPhone 3.0 application provides a number of services for the campus and the community. With the flick of a finger, users can access information about upcoming campus activities, university news and events and view UNCW YouTube videos.
The experience of developing the UNCW Mobile application in the classroom inspired Valea and Whisenhunt to start their own business. Their software development company, BoomCo, specializes in the development and design of iPhone applications.
Valea and Whisenhunt are not the only students developing applications for UNCW. Graduate student Camilo Alvarez is introducing his iTour application this fall. This unique application is designed for incoming students and visitors who are unable to attend formal campus tours. It incorporates Google maps to pinpoint the individual's location on campus to show proximity from university buildings and other points of interest.
The iPhone initiatives reflect UNCW's commitment to providing the university with access to the most innovative technology and information in conjunction with the UNCW Information Technology Systems Division and Apple's University Developer Program, which promotes free iPhone programming resources to campuses.
Apple iPhone users have access to more than 75,000 applications in 77 countries. Tens of millions of iPhones have been sold since their debut in June 2007. To download the UNCW Mobile iPhone application, simply search for "UNCW" in Apple's iTunes App Store.
UNCW Mobile student creators are available for interviews and application demonstrations by request.
