Wilmington, N.C. - GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) CEO Andy White has awarded $50,000 to the University of North Carolina Wilmington to support a Cameron School of Business computer day camp that helps area 8th and 9th graders develop technical skills essential for their success in high school, college and beyond.
"Information technology is critical for both teaching and learning for middle and high school students. Students with poor technology skills do not have the ability to use technology effectively in their learning environment, so they tend to fall farther and farther behind their peers, especially in science and mathematics," said Larry Clark, dean of the business school.
Students with limited skills may not pass the N.C. Computer Skills Assessment, which means they will not be allowed to graduate from high school, he added.
"With GEH's generous support, UNCW will have the resources to help more students become proficient computer users," adds George Schell, associate dean of the business school. "The company's gift extends beyond financial support; GEH employees have volunteered to share their technical expertise with students."
The gift supports education on many levels, a priority for GEH, said Chief Information Officer Anup Sharma, a member of the UNCW Foundation Board of Directors.
"GE has become an industry leader by advancing new technologies and supports the advancement of students in Science and Technology. This program will enable students to find success in creating critical competencies for finding meaningful work in today's economy," he said. "We have found the combination of our resources of both funding and talent to be a powerful way to make a difference in the community."
