Wilmington, N.C. – University of North Carolina Wilmington resident dance company, alban elved, kicks off the New Year with a full-length work titled "Rooms." The work will premiere at 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 18 with a Preview Gala Performance and post-performance reception at Kenan Auditorium. "Rooms" will run through the weekend, with an evening performance on Sat., Jan. 19 and matinee performance on Sun., Jan. 20.

Based in Berlin, New York City and North Carolina, Karola Lüttringhaus' alban elved dance company has achieved critical acclaim for the energy, dramatic variety and visceral vitality of its choreography. In September 2007, alban elved partnered with the UNC Wilmington Office of Cultural Arts to become the university's resident dance company. The company has since launched the citywide Sarus Dance Festival and performed at various locations throughout Wilmington and the region.

Known for its athletic dance, striking visual components, and aerial works, alban elved often creates narrative pieces out of larger philosophical questions. "Rooms" is a new work inspired by Magical Realism, a genre that emerged in mid-century art and literature, and was later revived in the 1960s by Latin America writers, artists and filmmakers.

Lüttringhaus' full-length work interprets the story of Marta, eldest of three sisters, who returns home 18 years after a traumatic experience that resulted in amnesia. Excerpts of this work have been presented throughout the state, but the January performance at Kenan marks the NC premiere of the full-length version.

The UNCW Office of Cultural Arts presents the alban elved dance company and its new full-length work, "Rooms" at 8 p.m., Jan. 18 and 19, and 4 p.m., Jan. 20 in Kenan Auditorium. Tickets for the Preview Gala Performance on Jan. 18 are $35 and include a post-performance reception with the artists. Tickets for the Jan. 19 and Jan. 20 performances are $15 (reserved seating); $10 for students and senior citizens; and $8 for UNCW students.

Tickets are available at the Kenan Auditorium box office, 910.962.3500 or 800.732.3643. For more information, please visit uncw.edu/arts.
