UNCW and the Wilmington Housing Authority (WHA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on May 20 to establish a satellite office at a WHA development site. The satellite office will provide a centralized resource for ongoing services, research and collaboration with the WHA's public housing residents and surrounding neighbors. The signing occurred at the Hillcrest Community Center, located at 1402 Meares Street.

In addition, the WHA presented a $10,000 check to the university for the newly established Windell Daniels Memorial Scholarship for Public Housing and Section 8 residents. The scholarship, established by the Board of Commissioners and staff of WHA, honors recently passed Commissioner Daniels for his passionate work on behalf of the students and youth.

Both activities are the culmination of years of work between the WHA and UNCW. Faculty and students have performed needs assessments, provided after school programs and been involved in educational and service oriented activities in the WHA communities. Ongoing programs with UNCW include sustainability gardens, food access studies, needs assessments in the Creekwood South community, information technology internships, field placements through the department of social work and after school tutoring.
