Building on a foundation of school spirit, the University of North Carolina Wilmington will celebrate its first Teal Day, proclaiming teal for as the university's official school color. Teal Day will celebrate the unveiling of a new spirit rock and the signing of the Teal Declaration at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2009.
The 13.5-ton spirit rock is located at the intersection of Walton and Price drives across from the Student Recreation Center. The second spirit rock on the UNC Wilmington campus, it will be painted teal on Teal Day; attendees will be able to sign the rock. When UNCW was founded in 1947, the original school colors were green and gold. Since that time, teal unofficially has become a school color.
The Teal Declaration is a document drafted by the Student Government Association (SGA) to be signed by various leaders across campus to provide written documentation that will officially recognize teal as the school color of UNCW.
Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo, student body President Mark Blackwell, alumni association board Chair Jason Wheeler and other campus leaders will sign the Teal Declaration on behalf of their respective campus organizations and affiliations.
SGA university affairs Chair Charles Soden said, "The SGA researched and created the declaration when they noted the disparity between the historical school colors and the colors that we actually use on campus."
Various student organizations will be represented at Teal Day with promotional displays and giveaways. The Root Soul Project and UNCW High Seas a cappella group will perform.
The new spirit rock was donated by Weaver-Cooke, the contractors of Seahawk Village, Seahawk Landing and Seahawk Crossing residence halls. The rock will be painted by student groups to promote their organizations and events.
Media are invited to capture visual and interview opportunities upon request. The community is invited to join the teal festivities. Media Contacts: Joy Davis, UNCW Marketing and Communications, 910.916.8603 or davisjc@uncw.edu
