This year, the University of North Carolina Wilmington has joined the ranks of an exclusive group of higher education institutions included in the revised and updated 2010 edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges by Edward B. Fiske.
In his review of UNC Wilmington, Fiske states that "students enjoy extensive undergraduate research opportunities, a slate of solid sciences, and a close-knit community of like-minded individuals who like their modern academics mixed with a bit of old-fashioned Southern charm."
For more than 20 years, the Fiske Guide to Colleges has been an indispensible source of information for college-bound students and their parents for two main reasons. First, it is selective, covering just over 300 of the best and most interesting institutions in the United States and Canada. Secondly, it is a subjective presentation rather than a statistical one, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of each institution in terms of academics, social life and overall quality of life.
"Selecting the right university to meet an individual student's needs, goals and interests is one of the most important decisions any young person—and his or her parents—will ever make," said UNC Wilmington Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo. "Many prospective students and parents consult the Fiske Guide for information and guidance, and UNC Wilmington is proud to be included among the institutions Fiske has singled out to review and recommend."
DePaolo noted that inclusion in a publication with the reputation of the Fiske Guide reflects the commitment of UNCW to providing students with the most powerful learning experience possible, and the tremendous effort of faculty and staff to make that strategic goal a reality.
"Everyone on our campus is focused on meeting the needs of our students every day," she added. "Regardless of our individual roles within the organization, we all put students first, and it shows. We are a mid-sized institution with a growing campus, but students tell us they receive the personalized attention that would be expected at a small college."
Students, parents and high school counselors trust and recommend Edward B. Fiske and the Fiske Guide to Colleges because it is fiercely independent. The Fiske Guide accepts no consulting, advertising or other fees from colleges and has no outside relationship of colleges working on its behalf.
About the Author: Edward B. Fiske served for 17 years as Education Editor of The New York Times, during which time he realized that college-bound students and their families needed better information on which to base their educational choices. He wrote Fiske Guide to Colleges to help them.
