Four-time Grammy Award winner Jessye Norman will perform at UNC Wilmington's Kenan Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010. The performance, presented by the UNCW Office of Cultural Arts, is part of the university's Masters Series, featuring world-class artists and works of cultural and historical significance. The new series was launched last year with a sold-out performance by jazz great Wynton Marsalis.

Revered as one of the preeminent vocalists of our time, Jessye Norman garnered early acclaim for her portrayal of the title role in Verdi's Aida, the first of numerous leading dramatic roles she made uniquely her own. Following her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1983, she was immediately recognized as one of the most talented dramatic sopranos in the world. Since that time, Norman has been hailed for the diversity of her repertoire in collaboration with an equally diverse line up of artists, ranging from her performance of Wagner with the Berliner Philharmoniker to the sacred music of Duke Ellington with the London Symphony.

In recent years, Norman has expanded her artistic reach by collaborating with innovative artists such as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, choreographer Bill T. Jones and Grammy Award-winning hip hop luminaries, The Roots. Along the way, she has performed for presidents and royalty, received the nation's highest award in the performing arts, a Kennedy Center Honor and was the recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

"Throughout her stellar career, Ms. Norman has generated an unequaled reputation for vocal artistry," said Norman Bemelmans, UNCW director of cultural arts. "Her powerfully eloquent voice and magnetic stage presence have established her as one of the truly masterful performers of our time. We could not ask for a more distinguished artist to headline this year's Masters Series."

Norman's upcoming performance will feature the work of American masters, such as Eubie Blake, Harold Arlen, George Gershwin and Duke Ellington. Tickets go on sale at the Kenan Auditorium Box Office Thursday, Oct. 1.
