The University of North Carolina Wilmington Department of Theatre opens its 2009-10 production season Oct. 15-19 with Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, directed by faculty member Scott Nice. All performances are in the Cultural Arts Building SRO Theatre, which offers limited seating. Shows run at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday, with a 2 p.m. matinee performance Sunday.

A pivotal work in theatre, Waiting for Godot involves two tramps waiting by a roadside for someone named Godot. Though the tramps are male, this production features a female cast portraying characters who ponder the universal question, “What is it we’re waiting for?”

Waiting for Godot launches an exciting season of classic and contemporary plays with multiple Wilmington premieres and unique production concepts,” said Frank Trimble, chair of the UNCW Department of Theatre. “The human condition will be studied and celebrated in styles and themes including vaudeville, 1950s nostalgia, urban tragicomedy and the impact of technology. The scripts provide extraordinary challenges for student performers and a spectrum of entertainment for audience members.”

Individual show tickets for all 2009-10 performances are $12 general public, $10 UNCW employee/alumni or senior citizens, and $5 students. This year, the Department of Theatre is offering a new Season Punch Card, which provides four tickets in any combination for one or multiple performances, with the added benefit of offering advanced ticket purchase for all shows. A punch card holder may use four tickets for one performance, two tickets each for two performances, or as a single ticket for four performances. Punch card prices are $40 general public and $30 UNCW employee/alumni or senior citizens.

Tickets are available in advance at the Kenan Auditorium Box Office (Waiting for Godot tickets are available now) at 910.962.3500. The Cultural Arts Building Box Office is open one hour prior to performances for day-of-show ticket purchase and will-call pickup. For group rates or special accommodations, call 910.962.2061 or e-mail theatre@uncw.edu.
