The World at Large, a production of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, has been awarded the Silver Telly, the national awards' most prestigious honor. The annual Telly Awards honor the very best local, regional, and cable television commercials, programs, film productions and Web creations. This year, more than 11,000 Telly entries were received from 50 states and multinational groups.
World engages and educates the local community about current issues taking place around the world through a question and answer format. The program is a collaboration of the UNCW Division of Public Services and the Department of Public and International Affairs. As part of the department's Great Decision course, experts in various fields presented lectures to students, and were interviewed for the World about current challenges facing the world. Topics discussed have involved issues such as human rights, world hunger, global politics and economics, and international law.
UNCW graduate students help facilitate the World production. The award-winning sixth season featured guests such as Four Star Gen. Dan McNeill who discussed issues facing Afghanistan, and Silent Images founder David Johnson, who specializes in documentary photography of persecuted and oppressed populations.
Remonda Kleinberg, associate professor of public and international affairs, hosts The World at Large. Kleinberg's knowledge of the subject matter and her communication with her accomplished guests helped the program win the distinguished Telly. In addition to this honor, Kleinberg recently received a contract from the Carolina Academic Press for her new book, Politics of International Trade Regulation in the Developing World.
This is the second Telly Award for UNC Wilmington Department of Media Productions, the first earned in 2007 for The Marines of Montford Point documentary. World won the Silver Telly for its sixth season of production in the education category.
World episodes can be viewed on the Web at http://publicservicemedia.uncw.edu/video.html.
Kleinberg and others are available for interviews. Footage of the show and access to the UNCW TV studio is available by request.
