When Lewis Beale, freelance writer and instructor in the English department at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, started working on a story for Newsday about post-apocalyptic movies, he wanted to include the new feature film The Road, but he needed to find a way to screen the movie locally prior to its release. He called the production company, Dimension Films, and they agreed to send a copy to Wilmington for a local screening. Naturally, with his UNCW affiliation, Beale chose Lumina Theater in the Fisher Student Center on campus as the preview location. He and Sandra Jackson, film program coordinator for Student Affairs, have created an opportunity for UNCW students to enjoy a sneak preview of the movie, based on Cormac McCarthy's best-selling and Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28.
The preview is being hosted by ACE Films, part of the university's Association for Campus Entertainment.
The Road is an epic post-apocalyptic tale of a journey taken by a father (Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen) and his young son (newcomer Kodi Smit-McPhee) across a barren landscape blasted by an unnamed cataclysm that destroyed civilization and most life on earth.
The movie is free and tickets are available on a first come, first served basis starting at 6 p.m. night of show at the Lumina Theater box office. The preview is primarily intended for UNCW students, faculty and staff; however, a small number of seats will be reserved for media.
