The public and media are invited to the 100th birthday celebration of the historic University of North Carolina Wilmington Wise Alumni House 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 at 1713 Market Street. Festivities will include guided grounds tours, a chance to view the new Historic Wilmington plaque and refreshments, all sponsored by the UNC Wilmington Alumni Association.
The house was designed by architect Burett H. Stephens and built for Delgado Cotton Mills President Edwin C. Holt in 1908-09. It was purchased by Jessie Kenan Wise in 1916 and remained her home for more than 50 years. In 1968, the house was donated to UNCW by the Wise grandchildren Lawrence Lewis Jr. and Mary Lily Flagler Lewis. For 25 years, it remained vacant, until 1993 when the UNCW Alumni Association acquired a loan to restore the historic house to its original elegance. The house was formally dedicated on June 7, 1997.
Ionic columns, crystal chandeliers and hardwood floors are all part of the style and elegance of this house. Some aspects of the house illustrate its uniqueness, such as a spacious attic containing a stage which children used for entertainment. Media are invited to promote this event to the public, and to take advantage of great photo/footage opportunities.
