Creative performances, music and cultural diversity will unite students and community at the World ACTion Festival at University of North Carolina Wilmington at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 5 in the Burney Center and courtyard.
Non-profit organizations such as the Full Belly Project, American Red Cross and Amnesty International will encourage social action. Transtrum, a West African-inspired music group, will perform, and student artistic expressions and exhibits will display world culture and human rights issues. Students will share personal accounts of captivating experiences abroad and engage with community activists who have participated in the Peace Corps and international disaster relief efforts.
The World ACTion Festival is the final event of the Synergy Common Reading program, which unites freshmen with upperclassmen through a campus-wide reading of one book title. Students will showcase what they learned from this year's selection, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah. This book depicts a powerful account of war, violence, hope and redemption through a child soldier's eyes in Sierra Leone, Africa. Students, staff and faculty will go beyond the text to learn about human activism and social justice during the festival.
Media are welcomed to interview participants and to capture students in action.
