“The Emerging Faces of Hispanics in Southeastern North Carolina,” the inaugural conference on Latino affairs and resources for Southeastern North Carolina, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 2009 in the Warwick Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
Designed to bring resources together and build stronger networks to serve the Latino community, the conference will feature several keynote speakers and workshops on pressing issues for Hispanics in the region. Speakers include Axel Lluch, assistant director of Hispanic/Latino Affairs for Gov. Beverly Perdue, Matty Lazo-Chatterton, director of Latino Affairs for the North Carolina Senate, Antonio Puente, professor of psychology at UNC Wilmington, and Ministro Carlos Flores Vizcarra, Mexican Consulate in Raleigh.
“This conference will empower Latino citizens by providing access to resources and creating positive change in the areas of education, business, health care, safety and building community,” said Jose Hernandez, UNCW associate provost for institutional diversity and inclusion. “We want to bring people together to discuss critical issues in the Hispanic community and work toward common goals and solutions.”
Workshop topics will include meeting the health care needs of Latinos, economic opportunities, new education programs, domestic violence and accessing the services of the Mexican Consulate in Raleigh.
Hosted by UNCW Centro Hispano-Latino Alliance of Southeastern North Carolina, the conference will also offer exhibits and networking opportunities. Registration for the conference is $20 per participant, which includes continental breakfast and lunch.
