Dan Johnson, assistant professor and assistant chair of the music department, presented "Academic and Artistic Connections: College to Community," on Wednesday, Oct. 19 as a teaching workshop sponsored by the UNCW Center for Teaching Excellence.
Johnson is a certified Orff-Schulwerk instructor. The Orff-Schulwerk pedagogy is a way of teaching music and movement. Johnson shared with members of the faculty audience ways to map the Schulwerk philosophy onto their own disciplines.
At UNCW, Johnson teaches applied tuba and euphonium studies and courses in music education, music technology, and the Honors Scholars Program. He is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed as principal tubist with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, the Long Bay Symphony, and the UNCW Faculty Brass Quintet. He also performs with and directs the UNCW Early Music Consort.
Johnson is also slated to conduct Tuba Christmas, a performance of traditional Christmas carols by a tuba-euphonium ensemble, on Dec. 17 at Westfield Independence Shoppingtown.
Johnson attended a national conference on Orff-Schulwerk last November in San Diego, which CTE was able to cover some of the costs of. CTE has funds for faculty traveling to events or workshops related directly to teaching. Please contact Caroline Clements, CTE director at x3034 or clementsc@uncw.edu for more information about this opportunity. The CTE is located on the second floor in Randall Library.
