Susan F. Pierce, former professor and current professor emerita in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing, will join UNCW as a visiting professor and interim dean of the School of Nursing, effective July 1. She has been a faculty member at UNC since 1975 and has held numerous administrative positions including associate dean for administration and planning, associate dean for community outreach and chair of the Department of Social and Administrative Nursing Systems.
Pierce has a number of honors and awards, articles in refereed journals and other publications, an outstanding record of invited and refereed presentations, a range of consultancies and research, service and education grants. In addition to these accomplishments, she has an extensive record of teaching activities including curriculum development, undergraduate and graduate teaching, workshop presentations and direction of student thesis and dissertation programs.
She will be working with members of the UNCW SON to continue building the curriculum, assisting faculty in professional development and exploring additional outreach opportunities. She will also work with Provost Chapman in integrating the SON into the recently approved College of Health and Human Services.
Pierce will serve as the interim dean of the School of Nursing and work with the school's transition team, Bettie Glenn, Janie Canty-Mitchell and Ruthanne Kuiper until the permanent position of director of nursing is filled, possibly as early as January 2009, but more likely July 2009.
