Printing Services now provides papers that have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and Program for Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). Each of these forest certification programs aim to stop damage to the world's forest by promoting environmental responsibility. These certification programs establish guidelines and standards that address economic, social and environmental issues and pursue a balanced approach to ensure the sustainability of trees, one of the world's vital natural resources.
The certification programs focus on:
· Using certification to protect endangered, high conservation value forests
· Replanting or allowing natural regeneration of trees after harvesting
· Integrating social concerns of indigenous communities like Native Americans
· Encouraging and supporting local employment
· Maintaining forests as habitats for wild animals and plants
· Allowing healthy forests to continue their protection of climate and soil Many of the papers purchased by Printing Services also feature recycled paper content.
Another sustainable initiative from Printing Services is having an immediate impact on campus. iPrint stations now default to two-sided printing. While students are using iPrint stations for their printing more than ever, the stations actually have experienced a 35 percent reduction in paper usage \this semester because of the double-sided default.
