Chancellor's Walk Work on Chancellor's Walk resumed over the holiday break and will continue throughout this semester. The scope of work includes improving the drainage system to address storm water runoff, expanding the walking area with pavers down the center section between the two sidewalks, landscaping the area and adding a variety of trees that will provide badly needed shade along the walk. Fortunately we were able to save some of the existing shrubbery disrupted by the project by transplanting them to other areas of our campus. During this construction, at least one side of Chancellor's Walk will be open at all times. Every effort will be made to minimize the disruption and complete the project as quickly as possible. Renditions of what Chancellor's Walk will look like when completed can be viewed online - www.uncw.edu/ba/facilities/ChancellorsWalkRefurbishment.htm
Permanent Closing of Reynolds Drive The section of Reynolds Drive between Cahill and Price drives has closed permanently. The project will allow us to construct an underground concrete reservoir for the collection of area storm water. Not only will this improvement respond to concerns about flooding, but it also will enhance the aesthetics in the area and help the university's disaster mitigation plan, since this intersection is an integral part of our campus' evacuation routes. Safety continues to be a top priority at UNCW. As a reminder, this permanent road closure will change the way in which pedestrians and vehicles will travel in the back areas of campus. Drivers who now park in lots S or T (the lots between Dobo and Wagoner Halls) may enter the lots from Walton Drive.
Nursing Building The Nursing Building site work begun over the break with the removal of the asphalt parking lot and the trees along Cahill Drive. Fencing has been installed around the site, and construction activity will be ongoing throughout the semester.
Seahawk Crossing & Parking Garage The residence hall and parking garage projects are both on time and on budget for completion beginning fall semester 2009. The retail building, which is the last building in this complex to be built, also is scheduled to open in fall 2009. Through e-mails, @UNCW, campus forums and the Business Affairs Web site, Charlie Maimone, Vice Chancellor of Business Affairs, will continue to update the campus community throughout the year. Feel free to contact him at VCBA@uncw.edu with any questions about business affairs-related projects.
