The UNCW Department of Theatre concludes its spring season with the Mainstage Theatre production of the 19th century comedy Our American Cousin, Apr. 23-27. Shows are at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. There is a special Monday night performance scheduled for 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased an hour and a half before curtain at the Cultural Arts Building Box Office and are $5 for students, $10 for UNCW employees and $12 for the general public.
Directed by faculty member Terry Theodore, Our American Cousin was originally produced in 1858 and is best known as the play Lincoln was watching when he was assassinated at Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865. The director's concept is to recapture a sense of the period and includes a beautifully painted backdrop, olios, popular songs of the day performed during the scene breaks, traditional staging and historically accurate costumes.
In store for the exciting 2009-2010 season are classic plays by canonized playwrights, Beckett and Ibsen, with contemporary hits by two of the most prominent playwrights writing for the stage today: Waiting for Godot, Oct.15-19, Beckett (directed by Scott Nice); Wild Duck, Nov.19-23, Ibsen (directed by Ed Wagenseller); Our Lady of 121st Street, Feb.18-22, (in collaboration with the Upperman African American Cultural Center) Guirgis (directed by Renee Vincent); Dead Man's Cell Phone, Apr. 22-26, Ruhl (directed by Paul Castagno).
