Improved Cellular Coverage at UNCW 10/26/2009 2:17:27 PM  E-Mail Information Technology Systems Division (ITSD) has been working with AT&T over the past 10 months to bring ATT's first 3G network site in Wilmington to the UNCW campus. As of Oct. 1, 2009, the AT&T 3G network became available in Wilmington, due to the placement of the antenna on the UNCW water tower. This upgrade not only improves the coverage on campus and the surrounding areas, but it also offers a more robust platform for mobile applications and technologies. According to Debra Saunders-White, vice chancellor of ITSD, "Enhanced 3G network service goes a long way in our strategy to provide UNCW students, faculty and staff with improved, state-of-the-art, hand-held communications technology." Plans for future upgrades to cellular coverage include the construction of a 150 foot monopole in the residential life area of campus. This three-sided directional antenna system will increase coverage at the back of campus and inside the residence life buildings. It is projected that construction will be completed by February 2010.
