Since fall 2008, ITSD has been working with the Wilmington Housing Authority (WHA) – UNCW Community Campus to provide computers and computer training to the residents in the Hillcrest housing development. After setting up a computer lab in the facility, ITSD staff volunteers have been leading workshops focused on increasing the computer literacy of the residents.
Kim Lancaster, WHA UNCW Community Campus Coordinator, notes that when ITSD started the computer classes many of the participants did not even know how to turn on a computer. Several of these same residents are now using MS Word to type recipes, letters, resumes and other documents. One resident is even writing her memoirs.
ITSD is currently planning a spring program for the residents so that they can take classes in MS Office and obtain certificates upon completion of the program. According to Lancaster, "We are so happy to have the computers and the support that we receive from ITSD. The residents who have taken advantage of the computer classes have learned a great deal and now feel much more comfortable with technology."
